The Collections and Research Center in the Museum of Chinese in America implements the management and development of MOCA’s collection which houses more than 65,000 artifacts, photos, memorabilia, documents, oral history, and artwork.
Under the supervision and training of the Collections Staff, a Collections intern provides assistant to various collections management activities. Projects will be assigned depending on the skills and experience of the intern, as well as the time and length of duration the intern commits, which may differ one from the other.
Responsibilities
• Catalogue collections and reference library books using PastPerfect
• Make archival finding aids in ArchivesSpace
• Assist with registration work on organizing donors/lenders’ files, managing collections insurance, and shipment
• Organize institutional archives
• Create condition reports and measure dimensions for new acquisitions or as needed
• Create scanned images or digital photographs for new acquisitions or as needed
• Editing images for presentation preparation
• Conduct, edit, transcribe, archive and catalog oral history interviews (audio and video files)
• Make inventories for new collections or as needed
• Preserve physical items using archival materials
• Facilitate basic conservation activities
• Assist with research services
• Assist with storage set-up and management, as well as collections movement
• Perform other administrative tasks related to the collections
Qualifications
• Excellent organizational skills and an eye for detail
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as a team player in a fast-paced environment; handle multiple tasks at once; adhere to deadline
• Knowledge of digital photography and digitization technologies
• Experience with photograph, audio, and video editing software a plus
• Strong computer skills, knowledge of Photoshop, PastPerfect or TMS, Archivists’ Toolkit, Archon, or ArchivesSpace, or other museum collections or archival management system, preferred
• Experience handling museum, archives, or library collections a plus
• Knowledge of current archival arrangement and description standards, and knowledge of Library of Congress Authorities a plus
• Holding or pursuing a Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school a plus
• Literacy in Chinese preferred
