The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) presents its 2024-25 NEA Big Read initiative, featuring Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu, a National Book Award winner. Under the theme Where We Live, MOCA will host a series of free multidisciplinary public programs, including book discussions and community events with authors, artists, performers, and scholars throughout Winter 2024 and Spring 2025.

To celebrate the Hulu premiere of Interior Chinatown, MOCA invites you to a book discussion and writing workshop led by educator Alice Fung. This interactive program will explore literary appreciation and include a dynamic writing activity inspired by the book. Themes such as writing family histories, reflecting on the immigrant experience, and creating narratives that address real-world challenges will be central to the discussion. Participants will also receive a FREE copy of Interior Chinatown. This event is open to all, and no prior writing experience is required.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

About Interior Chinatown

Willis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son, but always he is relegated to a prop. Yet every day, he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant, where Black and White, a procedural cop show, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here, too, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy—the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. Or is it?

After stumbling into the spotlight, Willis finds himself launched into a wider world than he’s ever known, discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal, exploring the themes of pop culture, assimilation, and immigration—Interior Chinatown is Charles Yu’s most moving, daring, and masterful novel yet.
