In the Fall 2023, Professor Pamela Hatchfield taught a course, titled Transferable Skills in the Treatment of Objects and Sculpture, at the Judith Praska Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Conservation and Technical Studies at the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (NYU Conservation Center).

Hatchfield collaborated with MOCA’s Collections and Research, and private conservators from A.M. Art Conservation who worked with MOCA on the fire recovery, to identify objects from the MOCA collection with rich and meaningful community histories to serve as student projects for Hatchfield’s course. Storytelling, sustainability, health and safety, and origin stories formed integral components of the course, centering a values-based approach to conservation treatment.

After receiving training in crafting engaging and accessible stories, the students completed proper conservation treatments to these selected objects and created blog post to share their works.
