What does your family dynamic look like? How does it shift when a new member joins the picture? What about in an interracial family? The Museum of Chinese in America is pleased to collaborate with playwright Rachel Chin to present a staged reading of her new play, Mountain Mom. This play follows the couple Grace and Salim as they welcome a newborn baby. When Grace’s Malaysian-Chinese mother comes to the United States to stay with them, Salim, who is African American, must navigate the perils of cross-cultural communication. This reading will be followed by a Q&A session.

ABOUT Playwright Rachel Chin

Rachel Chin is a Malaysian-born Chinese playwright and actor based in Illinois. She is a nominee for the Playwrights’ Center’s upcoming Venturous Playwright Fellowship, and an inaugural resident of the Centre 42 Playwright’s Professional Development Residency, a Veda Mekani performing arts scholarship recipient, and a founding member of the sketch comedy group Otters United FC. Her plays have been produced by the Yale Cabaret, The Theatre of Others, MoreLife Theatre, The Wright Stuff Festival, and the Singapore International Festival of the Arts (SIFA X).
