The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) cordially invites you to an insightful discussion with Mimi Kwa, author of the best selling memoir House of Kwa. Kwa, a journalist and news anchor for two decades, reveals a life behind the camera that is far stranger than anything she has reported on. When her own father sued her, turning her hair grey overnight, Kwa delved into her rich family history to understand her complicated relationship with her father, Francis.
Riveting, colorful, and often darkly humorous, House of Kwa is an epic story spanning four generations of Kwa’s Chinese family. From the imperial compound in Beijing, down the silk and opium road to Southern China, and across to Hong Kong, it is an unforgettable tale of one woman’s courage to stand up to a lifetime of bullying and prejudice. Throughout her journey, Kwa finds inspiration in her father’s late older sister, the jet-setting, free-spirited Aunt Theresa, whose extraordinary life serves as a beacon of hope.
The conversation will be moderated by Yifan Wu, MOCA’s Director of Programs. Join us for this captivating discussion that uncovers a deeply personal journey of surviving against the odds and thriving through adversity.
About Mimi Kwa
25 years on TV, Mimi Kwa has cracked up John Cleese, and Serena Williams says Mimi’s interview was the best one she had ever done. But behind the scenes of Mimi’s glamorous and polished on-air appearance is a story of surviving against the odds. As a keynote speaker, Mimi speaks about thriving through adversity, sharing her deeply personal journey with humor and heart. Her life story is so extraordinary, it’s being adapted for the screen. The former Head of Disney Creativity says, “Mimi’s storytelling rivals my friends at PIXAR,” and Crazy Rich Asians 2 writer Amy Wang calls Mimi’s book a “must read.” As an MC, she brings warmth and poise, along with her veteran ABC newsreader and Channel Nine journalist skills, to the stage. She is also an accredited mindfulness meditation teacher.
