Hear opening remarks by Ronny Chieng, renowned stand-up comedian and actor; a special talk titled “A Year of Grit” by keynote speaker Dr. Angela Duckworth, CEO of Character Lab and author of #1 New York Times best-seller Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance; a featured performance of Jay Chou’s Chrysanthemum Terrace, Vivaldi’s Winter, and Maroon 5’s Memories, recorded at the Museum by Joyous String Ensemble; and MOCA’s 2020 Highlights and In Memoriam videos. The evening program is emceed by David Henry Hwang, award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and theater professor.

The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA)’s Legacy Awards Gala usually occurs this time each year—funds raised from the Gala make up over 30% of our annual revenue. Along with the cancellation of other fundraising events, MOCA has lost revenue of over $1.5 million this year. We invite you to support us through this special event. MOCA hopes this MOCA 40 VIRTUAL YEAR-END SPECIAL EVENT will help us reflect, bring us humor, and strengthen us for the path forward.

VIP Access grants you special perks and limited edition gift items from MOCA and its partners. It’s our way of saying thank you for supporting MOCA’s mission.

 

Individual VIP Access ($888) grants you an exclusive invitation to meet and greet with special guests at a VIP Virtual Zoom Reception immediately prior to Virtual Special Event. About Ronny Chieng

Biography

Ronny Chieng is a Chinese stand-up comedian and actor born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, raised in Manchester, NH, USA and Singapore, who graduated from the University of Melbourne in Australia in 2009 with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce.

In 2015 Ronny moved to New York City after being hired as a correspondent on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah on Comedy Central. He also lost 11kg but that was unrelated to comedy. In 2016 Ronny was named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch. In 2017 Ronny was casted in the Warner Bros. film “Crazy Rich Asians” based off the best-selling book by Kevin Kwan. Co-wrote and starred in his own television comedy series “Ronny Chieng: International Student” which aired on the ABC in Australia, the BBC, Comedy Central Asia and Comedy Central in the USA. In 2019 Ronny release his debut Netflix Stand-up Comedy Special “Asian Comedian Destroys America!”.

Achievements

Ronny has toured and recorded 4 one-hour stand up comedy specials – The Ron Way (2012), Can You Do This? No You Can’t. (2013), Chieng Reaction (2014), You Don’t Know What You’re Talking About (2015), which have won or been nominated for the following awards:

About Dr. Angela Duckworth

Dr. Angela Duckworth

Biography

Angela Duckworth is the founder and CEO of Character Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance scientific insights that help children thrive. She is also the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative, and faculty co-director of Wharton People Analytics. A 2013 MacArthur Fellow, Angela has advised the World Bank, NBA and NFL teams, and Fortune 500 CEOs.

Achievements

Prior to her career in research, Angela founded a summer school for underserved children that was profiled as a Harvard Kennedy School case study and, in 2018, celebrated its 25th anniversary. She has also been a McKinsey management consultant and a math and science teacher at public schools in New York City, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Angela completed her undergraduate degree in Advanced Studies Neurobiology at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude. With the support of a Marshall Scholarship, she completed an MSc with Distinction in Neuroscience from Oxford University. She completed her PhD in Psychology as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

Angela’s TED talk is among the most-viewed of all time.

Her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance is a #1 New York Times best seller. Angela is also co-host, with Stephen Dubner, of the podcast No Stupid Questions.


About David Henry Hwang

David Henry Hwang

Biography

David Henry Hwang is a playwright, librettist, screenwriter, and theater professor at Columbia University in New York City. His work includes the plays M. Butterfly, Chinglish, Yellow Face, Golden Child, The Dance and the Railroad, and FOB, as well as the Broadway musicals Aida (co-author), Flower Drum Song (2002 revival) and Disney’s Tarzan.

Achievements

Hwang is a Tony Award winner and three-time nominee, a three-time OBIE Award winner, and a three-time Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is also the most-produced living American opera librettist, whose works have been honored with two Grammy Awards. He co-wrote the Gold Record “Solo” with the late pop icon Prince, and was a Writer/Consulting Producer for the Golden Globe-winning television series The Affair. Hwang serves as Head of Playwriting at Columbia University and as Co-Chair of the American Theatre Wing. His latest work, Soft Power, written with composer Jeanine Tesori, opened at the Public Theater in 2019. It received four Outer Critics Honors, a Grammy nomination, and was a Finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize.


About Joyous String Ensemble

Joyous String Ensemble

Biography

Mixing an eclectic repertoire, the Joyous String Ensemble performs from traditional classical music to today’s pop hits and mash-ups – innovatively orchestrated and arranged to give the audience a unique listening experience.  Despite their youthful age, the group is a model of mature and brilliant musicianship.

Band Members

  • 14-year-old multi-talented cellist Justin Yu
  • 10-year-old violinist Christine Yu
  • The group also consists of violinists, cellists and bassists age 6-15

Musical Achievements

Over the past few years, the Ensemble has become an international sensation – with major TV appearances on the “Ellen DeGeneres  Show”, ABC’s “Good Morning America”, Fox News, NBC’s The Today Show, Steve Harvey’s “Little Big Shots” and World’s Got Talent. Internationally, the group has performed all over the world, including on Hunan TV’s “Amazing Kids” Show (China), SBS “Star King” (Korea) and SAT “Super Kids” (Germany).

Besides TV appearances, the group has performed at major concert venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Citi Field. And they already have garnered a robust social media following, with millions of youtube views and followers.
